Bearings for Steel & Metallurgy

Rolling mills run bearings under the harshest combination in industry: high load, high temperature, water and scale at the same time. Four-row cylindrical and tapered designs carry the roll necks, while self-aligning and thrust bearings take the rest of the mill train.

Typical duty

  • Very high radial load from rolling force, often with a heavy axial component.
  • Working temperature from 60 to over 200 degrees C on the roll neck.
  • Cooling water and mill scale washing the lubricant out of the bearing.
  • Shock load at the bite, and reversing duty on reversing mills.
  • Very long campaigns, with bearing life measured in months of continuous operation.

Recommended types & suffixes

Type, reason and the suffix that follows from it
TypeWhy it suits the applicationSuffix guidance
Four-row cylindrical roller bearingsRoll neck bearings: maximum radial capacity in a given space.Arranged with thrust bearings to take the axial load separately.
Four-row tapered roller bearingsCombined radial and axial load without a separate thrust bearing.Set the axial clearance precisely; matched rows simplify it.
Spherical roller bearingsFans, conveyors, mill stands and run-out tables.Hot service needs C3/C4 clearance and heat-resistant grease.
Thrust bearingsScrew-down, edger and vertical roll positions, taking pure axial load.Cylindrical or spherical thrust designs with machined cages.

Installation & maintenance notes

  • Water and scale ingress is the dominant failure cause - seal design and the lubrication system matter more than rating.
  • Allow for thermal expansion between the roll neck and housing with a floating position.
  • Specify the bearing for the mill's actual temperature, not the ambient figure.
  • Use oil-mist or circulating-oil lubrication where the operating temperature demands it.
  • Inspect roll neck surfaces and re-condition them; damaged necks destroy new bearings quickly.

Common mistakes in this industry

  • Using a standard spherical roller bearing on a hot roll neck and finding it preloaded once it warms through.
  • Letting cooling water into the bearing housing because the seal glands are worn.
  • Setting four-row tapered clearance by feel rather than according to the manufacturer's measured procedure.

Frequently asked questions

Why does a roll neck use four rows?
Because the rolling force is enormous and the radial space is fixed by the roll diameter. Four rows of rollers in one envelope give the highest radial capacity available for that neck diameter.
How is a hot mill bearing protected?
With a combination of seals, the right internal clearance and lubricant: triple or labyrinth seals against water and scale, a clearance class that accounts for the hot inner ring, and an oil or grease that keeps its viscosity at temperature.
What causes early failure in mill bearings?
Contamination, not fatigue. Water and mill scale destroy the lubrication film, but water also corrodes raceways, and once corrosion pitting starts, spalling follows within a short time.
