Bearings for Fans, Blowers & HVAC
Fan and air-handling duty is all about speed, noise and reliability at low load. Belt-driven arrangements dominate, which puts overhung loads on the bearings, and the units are often installed where nobody can reach them for relubrication - so sealed, greased-for-life products win on total cost.
Typical duty
- Light loads from unbalance and belt pull, rising sharply if a belt is over-tensioned.
- Speeds from a few hundred rpm on large fans to 3,000 rpm on small blowers.
- Contamination: dust, lint, and in food and pool plant, washdown chemicals.
- Condensation during shutdown in cold air streams.
- Noise limits inside occupied buildings, which pushes towards quiet ball bearings.
Recommended types & suffixes
Type, reason and the suffix that follows from it
| Type | Why it suits the application | Suffix guidance |
|---|
| Ball bearing units | Self-aligning insert bearings in cast plummer or flange housings: the standard for belt-driven fans. | Choose the seal for the environment; eccentric collar or set-screw locking. |
| Deep groove ball bearings | Directly mounted fan and motor bearings, quiet and efficient. | 2Z or 2RS shields, C3 clearance on hot air streams. |
| Self-aligning ball bearings | Absorb shaft deflection and misalignment on long fan shafts. | C3 or C4 clearance when the shaft runs hot. |
| Flange and take-up units | For belt tensioning and wall or ceiling mounting. | Match the housing style to the mounting surface. |

Installation & maintenance notes
- Check belt tension: it is the single biggest driver of premature fan bearing failure.
- On long shafts use self-aligning bearings so that deflection does not load the raceway edges.
- For hot air streams, raise the clearance one class and use high-temperature grease.
- Sealed-for-life bearings are usually cheaper overall where relubrication access is difficult.
- Beware of unsupported overhung impellers - the bearing takes the bending moment.
Common mistakes in this industry
- Over-tensioning a belt and then blaming the bearing for the failure.
- Using a plain bearing unit without a seal in a dusty air stream.
- Assuming a washdown environment needs a bigger bearing rather than a properly sealed one.

Frequently asked questions
Why do fan bearings fail on the belt drive side?
Belt pull is an overhung load, so the drive-side bearing carries both the belt force and the weight of the impeller. Excessive tension, misaligned pulleys and a worn belt all increase it.
Are sealed bearings suitable for HVAC units?
Yes, and they are usually the best answer: sealed for life, no relubrication access needed, and 2RS contact seals resist humid air and condensation. Keep the speed below the seal's limit.
When should a fan use self-aligning bearings?
When the shaft is long, the housing seats are hard to align, or the structure flexes under load. Self-aligning ball bearings tolerate a few hundredths of a millimetre of misalignment that would load the edges of a deep groove bearing.
