Bearings for Conveyors & Bulk Handling

Conveyor and bulk handling duty is slow, dusty and continuous. Belt pull, material weight and misaligned structures load the bearings steadily, and because the equipment usually runs in a production line, planned replacement beats reactive repair.

Typical duty

  • Moderate, steady radial load from the belt and conveyed material.
  • Slow rotation, sometimes only a few dozen rpm, which makes lubrication film formation difficult.
  • Abrasive dust and fines at the load point and around the belt.
  • Misalignment from long, welded frames and settling supports.
  • Outdoor temperature range on stockyard and port installations.

Ball bearing unitsIdler, pulley and drive shaft support: self-aligning, sealed and easy to replace.Plummer, flange and take-up housings; triple-lip seals in dusty service.
Self-aligning roller bearingsHeavy pulleys and rollers where load and misalignment are both high.W33 lubrication, C3 clearance, brass cage for shock load.
Deep groove ball bearingsRollers, snub pulleys and small drives.2RS sealing in dusty positions, C3 for warm housings.
Needle roller bearingsBelt rollers where the radial envelope is thin.Drawn cup designs need a hardened, ground shaft.

Installation & maintenance notes

  • Slow rotation needs a lubricant chosen for low speed: grease with the right base-oil viscosity will not circulate on its own.
  • Seal selection is the life-determining decision in dusty plants.
  • Check sheave and pulley alignment to avoid loading the bearing edges.
  • Use take-up units where belt tension must be adjusted; they make maintenance faster.
  • Keep records per position: conveyor failures repeat at the same places.

Common mistakes in this industry

  • Ignoring speed in grease selection and using a high-speed grease in a 30 rpm roller.
  • Fitting a bearing unit in a washdown area without a seal rated for the chemical used.
  • Replacing a bearing without checking shaft roundness and seat condition.

Frequently asked questions

Which bearing is best for a conveyor roller?
A sealed ball bearing unit for most cases: self-aligning, protected, and quickly replaced. Where the radial space is thin, a drawn-cup needle roller bearing running on a hardened shaft is the alternative.
Why do conveyor bearings fail at the same position?
Because the cause is local: misalignment, belt tension, a worn shaft or a contaminated spot. Replacing the bearing without correcting the seat, alignment or seal means the new one fails at the same place.
How often should conveyor bearings be greased?
Follow the equipment schedule - often monthly at dusty, hot load points and quarterly elsewhere. Because rotation is slow, over-greasing is less of a risk than under-greasing, but keep the cavity half to two-thirds full.
