September 5, 2025 – Sustainability has become a key focus for the global bearing industry, with major manufacturers unveiling initiatives to reduce carbon emissions and adopt circular economy practices. A recent survey by the IBA found that 80% of leading bearing companies have set carbon neutrality targets by 2040, with 30% aiming to achieve the goal by 2030.
Key sustainable practices include using recycled materials, optimizing production processes, and designing bearings for recyclability. SKF, for instance, has launched a "Green Bearing" line made from 70% recycled steel, reducing carbon emissions during production by 40%. The company has also developed a take-back program for used bearings, recycling 95% of the materials for new production. "Sustainability is no longer a choice but a business imperative," said Johan Carlson, CEO of SKF. "Our customers, especially in the automotive and renewable energy sectors, are demanding eco-friendly solutions."
Other initiatives include the use of renewable energy in manufacturing plants and the development of low-friction bearings that improve energy efficiency in end-use applications. For example, NSK’s low-friction bearings reduce energy consumption in industrial motors by up to 15%, contributing to lower carbon footprints for end-users. The industry is also exploring bio-based lubricants as an alternative to petroleum-based products, further reducing environmental impact.
